Pickleball Lessons in San Rafael

Marin's pickleball center, and the one town where who owns the court changes what is allowed on it.

  • 2 venues in San Rafael
  • 8 playable courts
  • Mixed free and paid venues
  • Yes floodlit evening play

San Rafael has more public pickleball than any other town in Marin and more than most towns anywhere on this site. Some of it belongs to the city and some of it belongs to Marin County Parks, which runs two separate venues inside the city limits, and the two organizations do not have the same rules.

That sounds like paperwork and it is, but it changes your answer to a simple question: where can we meet. At one county venue private instruction is allowed with a permit. At the other, commercial use is banned outright and you will be asked to leave. The city publishes neither rule for its own courts but does run a formal route for approved instructors. A coach who says the venue makes no difference has not read the signs.

San Rafael is also the one town at this end of the patch where winter is genuinely solved. There is a racquet club here with indoor pickleball courts, which is more than almost anywhere in Sonoma County can say. It is private and paid, but it exists, and that changes what a January lesson can look like.

The county courts at McInnis can be booked, and coaching there needs a permit

Marin County Parks lets you reserve a pickleball court at McInnis Park online, which is rare around here and makes a scheduled lesson dependable in a way a first come, first served court never is. The county is equally clear about the other side of it. Its page for the park states: "A permit is required for private instruction, camps, classes, leagues, tournaments, or commercial use." That is the county's business rather than yours, but it is worth knowing it exists.

The county's other San Rafael courts do not allow it at all

McNears Beach Park is also inside San Rafael and also run by Marin County Parks, and its posted court rules are stricter. Play is first come, first served with an hour limit when others are waiting, and the rules say "Commercial use is not allowed. Violators will be asked to leave the courts." There is no permit route there, only a special event permit for tournaments. Same city, same department, opposite answer.

The city took the locks off its courts

San Rafael's own tennis courts used to need a key and an annual fee. The Park and Recreation Commission approved a pilot to remove the locks and the city now says plainly that it no longer charges the annual key access fee, so its courts are open to anyone on a first come, first served basis. Only some of them are lined for pickleball, which is the thing to check before you drive to one.

The city runs indoor clinics of its own

Since July 2026 San Rafael has offered indoor beginner and intermediate pickleball clinics at one of its community centers, run by an outside provider under contract and booked through the city's own registration system. The beginner course covers rules, serving, returning, dinking and court positioning across four sessions. If you have never played that is one honest way in, and a private lesson or the Beginner Bootcamp is the other: a clinic is a group on a fixed schedule, a lesson is one to one.

There is a published way in for outside instructors

Unlike most towns on this site, San Rafael does not just regulate instructors, it recruits them. The city publishes a contract instructor route, offering approved instructors access to classrooms, gymnasiums and parks, a listing in the city activities guide, and use of the city registration system. It is a slower door than turning up at a court, and it is a real one.

San Rafael is a straight run down the 101 from Santa Rosa, and since the Marin-Sonoma Narrows work finished in 2025 the carpool lane is continuous from Windsor all the way south. Carpool hours run 6 to 9 in the morning and 3 to 6:30 in the evening on weekdays, so a mid-morning slot is a very different drive from a late-afternoon one. There is no travel charge, here or anywhere else, and the price on the lessons page is what you pay, but a day or two of notice helps and a longer session or a partner lesson makes the trip work better for both of us.

Questions

Booking a lesson in San Rafael

Which court will we use in San Rafael?

It depends on the day and time, because the venues here are run by different organizations with different rules. The county courts at McInnis can be booked in advance, which makes them the dependable choice for a scheduled lesson. Say when you are free and the venue is confirmed with the booking.

Should I take the city clinic instead?

Both are sensible first steps. The city runs indoor beginner clinics, which put you in a group on a fixed schedule and are easy to sign up for. A private lesson or the Beginner Bootcamp is one to one, so the whole hour can go on the shot that keeps failing.

Is there a travel charge to San Rafael?

No. There is no travel charge, here or anywhere else, and the price on the lessons page is what you pay. It is a long drive, so a day or two of notice helps, and a longer session or a partner lesson makes it work better for both of us.

Can I keep playing in winter?

More easily than in most of Sonoma County. There is a racquet club in San Rafael with indoor pickleball courts, and the city's own clinics run indoors at a community center. Both are other people's facilities on other people's schedules, so check with them before relying on it.
